Matric Farewell Photos of Jaiden

We decided to do Jaiden’s matric farewell shoot in Raslouw. The sky was overcast, casting a soft light with gentle shadows, one of my favourite lighting conditions to shoot in.

This was my second session with my new mirrorless camera after switching from DSLR. The upgrade came with a host of features that simply didn’t exist on DSLRs. I’m still adjusting to the changes, but the improvements – like eye-tracking, have already made life much easier. At the end of the day, light is still the most important part of photography, but when your gear works with you, it’s a bonus.

I used to rely a lot on off-camera flash, and while that can give stunning results, I’ve started to embrace the natural light I’m given. My shooting style has shifted too. I used to love a shallow depth of field, often shooting at f/2.8 or even f/1.4. But the more I’ve observed and been inspired by art, especially paintings, the more I’ve gravitated towards simplicity. These days, I often shoot with a smaller aperture like f/8 and use wider lenses, keeping more of the scene in focus to give a more painterly feel.

I also keep my editing to a minimum – just enough to adjust colours and tones to match the mood I want to create.

So here it is – Jaiden’s matric farewell photos taken in Raslouw.
